#Volunteers Week Special - Hazel Smith, Volunteer at CHIPS

June 2nd, 2017
Hazel
Hazel Smith is a parent trustee at CHIPS, and has been since 2010. She has a son Jack who is 14, with additional needs, who attends CHIPS.
Hazel also supports CHIPS climbing club which runs weekly, chamioning the attendance which was critical to the continuation of the club earlier in 2016, she is CHIPS link to Hoddesdon model railway club who run sessions for CHIPS and she is parent link at Ware CHIPS supporting 80 parents at the scheme.
In addition to this she is the pivotal fundraiser for CHIPS raising over £40,000 in 5 years. She has been involved in many small events but two of the stand out events were completing a 100km walk from London to Brighton raising over £9,000 for CHIPS in the process and a balloon jump off Brighton pier, dressed up as the old man from film UP.
Most of Hazel's time is spent supporting CHIPS but she has also done a Nordic walk event at Christmas 2016 and donated her wages to hearing dogs.
Hazel uses pretty much every waking moment to come up with ingenious ideas to fundraise for CHIPS and uses her friends, family and network as an aerobics instructor/Nordic walker/ mum of an additional needs child to fundraise for CHIPS.

She has inspired Hanbury Manor Woman’s Golf captain to have CHIPS as their charity of the year -she gave a speech to the ladies about her experiences as a parent with a child of additional needs on 1st Jan and raised £3000 on the day. Hazel sells cakes once a month at Panshanger park run, asking for runners to consider supporting CHIPS for future challenges.
If you are inspired by Hazel's voluntary work for CHIPS, you can get involved by supporting CHIPS with their forthcoming events this year. They include:
September CHIPS Souper Walk in Bishops Stortford - a guided walk with homemade soup and cakes as a treat at the end.
On the 30th of September 2017, Hazel will also be attempting to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the biggest attendance to a Nordic Walking Lesson ever! The goal  is 350 people, Hazel is planning, organising and running the event with the local Mayor of Hertford attending.
CHIPS also have their Glitter Ball on 7th October and a Christmas quiz in November.
