Steven and Zaheer

Steven and Zaheer both volunteer for Groundwork East in their spare time. They find volunteering outdoors both therapeutic as well as enabling them to gain great work experience.

Volunteer: Steven Valentine

'I have only been volunteering with Groundwork for a few months but I will volunteer for every opportunity that I can. I heard of them through a local community-based charity and thought it would be a great place to volunteer.

I had been volunteering with other companies but I really wanted to volunteer somewhere that could improve my opportunities and help me gain relevant experience that could help me with work.

I volunteer as often as I can and it doesn’t interfere with other life commitments. I really enjoy the social impact of the volunteering. Volunteers are important because they really make a difference and help not only transform people’s spaces but help with their lives.

It is fantastic, getting to work outdoors all of the time, learn new skills, use new tools, meet new people and there are also some brilliant people that work for Groundwork that will work with you. There are many different ways you can volunteer with Groundwork but if you visit their website and fill out a quick survey (https://www.groundwork.org.uk/Sites/east/Pages/volunteer-with-us-east) then the relevant people will be in touch when the right thing comes us'.

Volunteer: Zaheer Mohammed

'I have been volunteering with Groundwork for a month or so – I had been doing other volunteering with a local charity and was recommended Groundwork as I was really interested in what they did.

I really liked the way that Groundwork’s volunteering opportunities were presented and I had done that work before. I thought it would be good for me and that I would be good at it.

I volunteer as often as I can and find it easy as I volunteer with people that I get on with and we can then do other things. Volunteering really helps the local community and helps us as well.

It is great to get into something like this and it may also lead to employment. Plus, you meet great people and it is therapeutic'.

About Groundwork
Changing places, changing lives – one green step at a time

Big global issues – the economy, the environment – have a big local impact.   We work across the UK helping communities find practical solutions to the challenges they face.
We provide training and create jobs, reduce energy and waste, re-connect people with nature and transform whole neighbourhoods. Step by step we’ll go on changing places and changing lives until everywhere is vibrant and green, every community is strong enough to shape its own destiny and everyone can reach their potential.
