A study from the London School of Economics and Political Science has identified the key role corporate volunteering plays in establishing charitable cultures, both inside and outside of the workplace. The study found that the practice can benefit both employers and employees in many ways, with employees reporting a greater sense of pride in their organisation. We caught up with Natwest to learn about their experience
A number of NatWest’s Premier Banking and Business banking managers supported two charities in 2017. First, in November 2017, we worked with Small Acts of Kindness in Watford by helping to package gifts, which they delivered to the older people in Hertfordshire. The second charity was the Watford Foodbank, where we helped to collect tins of food for local people in crisis. This activity was carried out in the local Tesco Store.
Part of my role at NatWest is to connect with the local community. In the summer of 2017 I met Hema Pandya, who is a business connector in Watford’s Business Connectors Programme, and she introduced me to these two great local charities. I then spoke to my colleagues at the bank to see if they would be supportive in helping the charities with the activities they required help on.
We felt that we wanted to do something in the local community. When the opportunity came up to support the local foodbank and Small Acts of Kindness, it was very easy to get a team together to support the activity. The work they do is important and really impacts the people they support. Everyone in our team really enjoyed the experience and believed in what they do to help others in need.
During 2017, we had ten employees take part in both of the local initiatives. It was great teamwork and good to see the end result. The experience was discussed many times after the event and we all would be willing to support them again.
It was a great opportunity to collaborate as a team. There is a real feel good factor in supporting local non-profit organisations. Some of the staff that supported the event don’t often see each other due to work locations so it also supports productive interaction which builds good relationships in the workplace.
It increased local recognition, to show that despite being a large national business, we are committed to helping our local communities. It helped me personally by providing an opportunity to be introduced to other connections in the community and broaden my eco system.
They really appreciated the support from the bank. We received great feedback from the charities for the amount of staff we were able to provide. In the long term, we’ve managed to create strong relationships which gives us a great local platform to provide future support.
