Top things to think about before volunteering:

  1.  Why are you doing it? If you know why you want to volunteer then you are more likely to know what you want to do. If you are doing work that is of interest to you then you are more likely to get more out of your volunteering role.
  2. What do you want to do? Think about your skills, the things you enjoy and what you’re good at.
  3. How much time can you give?  Would you be better suited to a regular volunteering role or would a micro-volunteering or ad-hoc role suit your lifestyle better? Be realistic about how much time you have to devote to volunteering and over what period of time.
  4. What skills do you have to offer? You may have specific specialist skills that would be invaluable to a charity, this could be anything from financial, musical or IT skills or being a good listener. Think about the skills you have and how these could be best utilised when considering the type of activity, you would like to volunteer for.
